Charming wedding and product photographer: Edyta Szyszlo, Part 1

Edyta and I worked together with Paper Source and Paperly and I loved her so much I asked her to shoot my wedding last spring, which turned out simply gorgeous! She is currently based in my college town, San Francisco, which plays up to her charming personality and unique sense of personal and professional style.

What do you do for a living? And is it the path you thought you would be on today?
I’m a photographer specializing in weddings and product photography. Honestly, I never imagined myself photographing weddings, especially since many thought being a wedding photographer was seen as reputable at the time. While in school, I knew I would work in the commercial or editorial fields. Post graduation, I worked for a food packaging photography studio and by lending a last minute hand to a wedding photographer discovered how satisfying it was!

Tell us a bit about your average day.
It depends what time of year! Basically, 50% of my year is somewhat low key, catching up on rest, production and taking on product clients. The other half is the hectic wedding season and the production that follows. I do my best to balance my daily life between business and pleasure. And I’m definitely better at it some days and others not!

How do you continue to learn /evolve while doing it all?
Good question! It comes down to how well you can balance, plan and control. I find it easy to catch up on trends and inspirations through blogs and social networks. And they are a great way for family and friends to keep up with me even if I can’t make the phone call often. I believe it’s something that business owners will always battle. There’s good and bad phases, you just have to keep your eyes open and learn what works from both.

How do you stay true to yourself as an individual in the business world?
Not getting too caught up in it all and reflecting. I’m keeping that general because it can apply to the type of people you network with to not being able to shut your brain off from business thoughts. For me, it’s the small details in life that keep me going – friends, family and hobbies.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years, in your business and personal life?
Honestly, the bit of the same – setting goals every year and growing towards achieving them. Maybe I’ll own a house by then!

part 2 coming up later this week…
